Preparing for Newsletter Advertising Visitors

There are endless ways to get in front of people that might be interested in what you have to offer.  Your network of freinds and colleagues is a potential gold mine.

Recent posts here focused on building ad images or banners to be placed on another site. The final ads were added to the website of a friend of mine.He knows who he is and I thank him for the opportunity to share some revenue.

Another friend has offered up an ad slot in a widely distributed newsletter that is ripe for B2B offers. I think he said the audience was 70,000.

We agreed after reviewing all of my sites that www.WebPageAdvisor.com is the most landing page ready. We set to work to make just a couple of enhancements due to the short turn-around time in the hopes that the site will convert even better.

The Home Page "Get Started" button now hovers over a simple text link that says "Order Now". The addition of the text link does three things.

  1. One it gives the visitor a way to "buy now" if that is what they want.
  2. Second, it indicates that the "Get Started" button is not going to take them to a "Order Now" page or a squeeze page.
  3. And third it offers an alternative call to action.  All three seem like good ideas.

The next Home Page change is a new paragraph just above the "Learn More" button.  This is a feeble effort to raise the point that a phone consultation is inclided and to state the price. I wish it was higher up the page, but the design and copy did not lend itself to another location.

The "What Is It?" page got the most attention, all in the left sidebar.

  1. The Personal Phone Consultation header was added
  2. The Personal Phone Consultation content was moved to the top
  3. Get Started and Order now button and link were added
  4. The See a Sample Report link was added to the bottom of the sidebar

The purpose here is to emphasize the personal phone consultation and provide calls to action and no "dead ends",  which means getting to the end of a page or section and finding nothing to click on.

The Sample Report page got a "Scroll Down to See the Full Report" text added to the top of the page.  This became more important because the newsletter advertisement's call to action is -

See A Sample Report Now!

Context has so much to do with meaning. Mike from Scalable Intimacy has lent his marketing genius on this project and I naturally provided a Web Page Advisor report for his marketing blog. In fact it was used as the sample report.  Well, it was pointed out to me by someone who doesn't know Mike or his marketing blog that Scalable Intimacy could be misconstrued or distracting. So, that got rubbed out of the sample report's heading for that reason. Also, to make it more "evergreen" the date and time were removed.

The bulk of the text was removed from the Order Now page to keep it short.

A couple of other pages got the Get Started button and Order now link added to them as well.

A lot of subtle changes, but we hope that this will improve the conversion rate of any visitors brought in by the newsletter ad.

What would you suggest changing to improve conversions?

WordPress Robots.txt files Explained

Web Page Advisor has a new post http://webpageadvisor.com/wordpress-robots-txt-files-explained/ that explains the purposes, effectiveness, misunderstandings as well as an example and a warning about the Robot.txt file for WordPress and general users.

A useful list of resource links is included as well as instructions on how to view the robots.txt file on your favorite WordPress site.  Click to visit the blog and read about the Robots.txt file and leave a comment if you like.

Three Final Web Page Advisor Ads

I am thrilled to see these ads take shape.  I was playing around in Photoshop and added the gears as an alternative. I think the idea of “building new” and the image of gears work well together.

Next step is to hand-pick a few affiliates and start testing the ads to see which perform.  Then we can make some improvements, rinse and repeat.

Sidebar Ads to promote WebPageAdvisor

Time to develop a few sidebar ad squares to promote WebPageAdvisor.  Here are two ads that form the starting point to base revisions on.

Unfortunately, the logo is not resonating with the viewers and we need a bit more punch.

125 X 125 Ad Design Needed

After two requests the idea finally sinks in and I now realize it is time to take action.

The next step in this project is to design and write the copy for a 125 X 125 graphical ad that could be placed on a website and link back to www.WebPageAdvisor.com.

The two major components are design and copy.  I think I will dodge the animated .gif even though it would allow more text to be presented and catch people’s eye. You agree?

The ad will include;

1)      Blue and/or white background similar to the site
2)      Logo
3)      Site Title – Web Page Advisor
4)      Ad copy or variation on the slogan.

Possible ad copy;

1)      Is your site working hard enough?
2)      Is your site working hard for you?
3)      Are you sure about your site?
4)      Is your site setup right?
5)      Professional site review and revision
6)      Need your website to be more effective?
7)      Is your website costing or making you money?
8)      Please leave a suggestion. Please. ;-)

What suggestions do you have about the ad copy or ad design?

New Post: How to Type Your Phone Number

When reviewing sites at Web Page Advisor I see a lot of amazing things that don’t make sense.  A telephone number listed on a website seems like a basic component of a website. This post covers a few of the common mistakes and suggests a few best practices and benefits of including a properly formatted local telephone number on your website.  Hint: Don’t use an image file to share your phone number.

Female / Male Split Testing

Wpa-home-woman-split-test

A/B split testing lets you present two different designs or entire websites and compare how they perform.  It is usually most effective comparing small incremental changes.  In this test the only difference is the Hero Image. One is a puzzled man, which you have seen in every previous post.  Today we introduce the puzzled woman.

Don’t Women Always Win?

Even before the testing begins I think that the woman is a much better image to use for the site.  This model looks more like what a typical client might look like. She will appeal to both male and female visitors. She looks a lot smarter than the guy does.  I am hoping to encourage a lot of people to visit the site so that we can gather some statistically relevant data in the test.

Split Test Plugin

SES Theme Split Test plugin is how I chose to implement the test. To use it create a duplicate theme, change the image and then select both themes in the plugin configuration page.  Then create a custom segment in Google Analytics for tracking. I am at that stage where I am waiting for the values to show up in Google Analytics to track the custom segments.

Remember to Edit both Themes

Now I just have to remember to make any other incremental changes in both themes.  For example, at the bottom of each page is a text link to the next page.  I just made those a tad more obvious by changing the text to an <h4>, which in this theme bolded it. Now I need to remember to do the same in the second theme.

When you visit www.WebPageAdvisor.com do you see a man or a woman?
Which do you prefer? Have you seen an image that might be even better?  Leave a message below or tweet at http://twitter.com/webpageadvisor
